Press Release
Norris lake Stakeholder Strategic Planning
Neva Kitts
On Thursday morning, May 10, 2012, approximately 40 individuals met at
Big Ridge State Park with a single objective: How to keep Norris
Lake , and its shoreline in the best possible condition for us and
future generations. Several of the top concerns included pollution,
litter, conservation, environmental issues, boating practices,
water-sheds, and lake usage as a whole.
Agencies, homeowners, and concerned groups gathered at Big Ridge State
Park for a strategic planning of Norris Lake Stakeholders. Agencies
represented were TWRA , TN Dept. of Environmental Conservation, TVA,
Anderson County Chamber of Commerce , Anderson County Tourism , Union
County Chamber of Commerce , Friends of Norris Lake and the
Environmental Officer from Campbell County Sheriff’s Department,
Homeowner Associations represented were Hickory Pointe, Helms Ferry,
Highlands, Norris Shores , and Sunset Bay . Also present were
representatives from Keep Union Co. Beautiful, Plan East Tennessee,
Norris Lake Marina Assoc., local marina operators and other lake-based
businesses.
After recognizing the top 3 issues … education, as it relates to
litter; enforcement of laws already on the books; and marine &
environmental sanitation, committees were formed and plans developed.
It was decided that each committee would schedule their own meetings,
then as a group, we will all meet again in three months with the
facilitator from TVA’s Community Development team. At that time each
committee will report what plans have been (or will be implemented) as
well as what we see as our long term objectives.
We have three great committees put together and are hopeful for the
betterment of our resources.
